In this tutorial, we’ll be looking at the backing vocals (vocal harmonies) for a Pop Rock track I recorded and mixed here at Signature Sound Recording Studio. I’ll be showing you all the processing that went into this track and the reasons behind my adjustments.
For the background vocals for the harmonies, we want them to stay pretty well in tune with each other. Harmony lines support the lead vocal, we don’t want them to draw unwanted attention by having any wandering pitches, hence why they’re tucked back in the mix. To achieve this, I used a combination of Auto-tune, EQ, and Compression, and I also threw on a DeEsser. In the end, everything comes together pretty well, and the track sounds great!
